What are blood types & why do they matter?

Diving into the realm of blood types reveals a fascinating aspect of human biology that's more intricate than you might initially think.

Medical illustration of the different blood types.

THE SETUP

What are the blood types?

The main characters in the blood-type story are A, B, AB, and O.

According to the American Association of Blood Banking, O+ tops the chart as the most common blood type, while AB- takes the spot as the rarest. Here's a quick glance at the distribution:

  • A+: 34%

  • A-: 6%

  • B+: 9%

  • B-: 2%

  • AB+: 3%

  • AB-: 1%

  • O+: 38%

  • O-: 7%

Medical illustration of the different blood type letters and what they mean

THE ANSWER

What do the letters mean?

It all boils down to the proteins, known as antigens, on your red blood cells.

There are two main ones – A and B.

Having A antigen gives you type A blood, B antigen means type B, both A and B indicate type AB, and no antigens lead to type O blood.

Blood types also involve antibodies – the immune system's defenders. Type A blood has anti-B antibodies, type B has anti-A, AB lacks these antibodies, and O has both anti-A and anti-B. These antibodies develop in infancy and remain throughout life.

THE ANSWER

What does the +/- mean?

Then there's the Rh factor, adding another layer to blood typing.

Dominated by the D antigen, its presence marks your blood as Rh+; its absence labels it Rh-.

About 85% of people in the U.S. are Rh+.

The Rh factor becomes crucial in scenarios like blood transfusions or pregnancy.

An Rh- individual exposed to Rh+ blood, for instance, during a pregnancy where an Rh-mother carries an Rh+ baby, might develop antibodies leading to complications like hemolytic disease of the newborn.

THE ANSWER

Why does it matter?

Your blood type matters greatly when it comes to blood transfusions. If you receive blood that's incompatible with your type, your immune system may react adversely.

Compatibility ensures your immune system recognizes the antigens in the donated blood as friendly.

Here's a brief rundown of who can receive which blood type:

  • A+: Can receive A+, A-, O+, O-

  • A-: Can receive A-, O-

  • B+: Can receive B+, B-, O+, O-

  • B-: Can receive B-, O-

  • AB+: Universal recipient, can receive any blood type

  • AB-: Can receive AB-, A-, B-, O-

  • O+: Can receive O+, O-

  • O-: Universal donor, can provide to any blood type

THE FOLLOW-UP

Are there any exceptions?

Beyond the well-known ABO and Rh systems, over 600 antigens may attach to red blood cells, spread across more than 30 different blood group systems.

Some of these include the Duffy, Kell, Lutheran, and Kidd blood groups.

Among the rarest is Rh-null, so unique it's called "golden blood."

THE FOLLOW-UP

Besides for transfusions, does blood type matter?

You inherit your blood type from your parents, much like eye color.

Compatibility is key, especially in pregnancy, to prevent the mother's immune system from reacting against the baby's blood cells.

Though usually constant, blood types can change in rare cases, such as bone marrow transplants or certain medical conditions.

Interestingly, research suggests blood type can influence the risk of various health conditions, with certain types more prone to ailments like heart disease, memory loss, or ulcers.†

However, those with type O blood may enjoy a longevity advantage.†

In summary, your blood type is more than just a biological marker; it plays a pivotal role in medical treatments, pregnancy, and, potentially, your overall health risk profile.†
