Chocolate Milk ~ The Childhood Drink You Should Never Stop Drinking

While I don’t believe there is such a thing as superfoods, chocolate milk comes pretty damn close. Delicious and densely-packed with micronutrients, chocolate milk is an extremely healthy food that we can consume daily. In one glass of chocolate milk you can consume about 25% of your daily requirements for the fat-soluble vitamins A, D & K. Milk and dairy is one of the best sources of calcium and this recipe contains ⅔ of your daily calcium requirements. Lastly, milk is packed with the B vitamins riboflavin and B12 in addition to containing lots of essential minerals like magnesium, selenium, copper, and potassium. 

The Recipe:

  • 2 Cups Organic, Grass-Fed Whole Milk
  • 1 Scoop zuCollagen Chocolate Protein
  • 2 TBSP Raw Honey or Sugar
  • 1 TBSP Raw Cacao Extract
  • Handful Of Ice
  • Pinch of Salt

  • Calories - About 500
  • Carbohydrates - 47 grams
  • Fat - 18.5 grams
    • Cholesterol - 70 mg 
  • Protein - 37 grams

Estimated Micronutrient Content:

  • Riboflavin = 1mg = 80% RDA
  • Vitamin D = 2.5mcg = 20% RDA
  • Vitamin A = 180mcg 23%RDA
  • Vitamin B12 1.3mcg = 100% RDA
  • 670mg Calcium ~ 67% RDA
  • 100mg magnesium ~ 25% RDA
  • Sodium = 280mg ~16%RDA
  • 18μg Selenium ~ 33% RDA

Do You Need To Consume Whole Milk?:

In the US all types of milk with a portion of the fat removed must be fortified with vitamins, specifically A & D. These vitamins are naturally fat-soluble, meaning they dissolve in fat. When you remove a portion of the fat out of milk, you’re taking the naturally occurring vitamins out with it. For these reasons, the US has mandated that low-fat or no-fat milks must have fortified vitamins added back in in order to prevent micronutrient deficiencies from occurring. Also, whole milk is a great source of Vitamin K which is not added back in with lower-fat alternatives.

The fortified vitamins that they add into the milk are not the same as the vitamins naturally found in milk. It’s like buying off-brand cereals, they taste okay, but you know it’s not the same and so does your body. Oftentimes the synthetic or fortified versions require a bit more work by your body to activate them and whether or nots its able to do so will depend on how much energy it has available.

Many people experience issues with milk, so called "lactose intolerance" but many times it's actually not the lactose that's causing their indigestion, but additives in poor-quality or low-fat milk. If you can consume ice cream or cheese without issue, but dairy gives you problems this is definitely the culprit And if you do still have issues digesting dairy even with a high quality milk, try very slowly easing it back into your diet over a period of weeks. 

The vitamins in whole milk are the exact vitamins missing in the diet of both you and your kids! As modern society no longer eats organ meats like kidney or liver we have lost our primary source of the fat-soluble vitamins A, E, & K. You cannot be healthy or hormonally balanced while being deficient in any essential vitamins or minerals!

Why Grass-fed, Organic?:

When it comes to milk, like all foods, quality is king. Buying organic food ensures that you're consuming as little as possible of endocrine disrupting chemicals like phytoestrogens that mess with your hormones. Organic foods also ensures that the feed the cows are fed comes into contact with less pesticides and the pesticides they use must be approved by the FDA to be qualified as organic. 

Grass-fed cows actually have a different nutrient profile because they are mostly fed grass. Grass-fed cows generally contain larger proportions of Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Vitamin K, and the B-Vitamins.

What About Raw Milk?:

If you're in a location where you can get access to raw milk, have at it. As long as you can find a trusted farmer who you know treats their animals well then raw milk is a nutrient-dense gold mine. During the pasteurization process used to kill any bacteria in the milk some of the vitamins are also broken down. Pasteurization makes milk more suitable to sit on shelves for longer periods of time, but doesn't necessarily make the milk better in any way. In fact, milk from healthy cows will not contain any harmful bacteria and does not need pasteurization.
